There are almost as many jokes about women and shoes or purses as there are, well, shoes and purses. And some of them hit pretty close to home, but others of us would rather have several women’s bicycles than a dozen pair of shoes. Ok, so sometimes a different type of shoe is required, but that’s totally not the same thing, and fortunately, women’s road bikes are not usually accessorized with a beaded purse.
What’s really terrific about there being so many different types of women’s bikes is that it means the industry is aware that there are those of us who find mountain biking to be an excellent form of fun and exercise. To do this properly, it is best to have a woman’s mountain bike rather than settling for a generic model. The same goes for women’s road bikes, women’s trek bikes, and women’s three speed bicycles. As anyone knows who’s ever wiped out on a trail – and anyone who’s ever ridden a trail or a road has wiped out – having the right bicycle for gender as well as terrain is important.
The same goes for women’s folding bikes. It’s great to be able to take a woman’s bicycle on vacation without strapping the rack to the back of the car or RV. Women’s folding bikes are the “just in case I want to” bikes, as opposed to say, a women’s trek bike, which is for the planned bike trip in the middle of a vacation.
Situation specific bikes are wonderful for when I’m planning on biking and it does matter that I have the right one, but having a bicycle I can carry just in case matters too. Kind of like having the right shoes.
