One of the things I hear a lot about today is how kids aren’t getting enough exercise. If you don’t count thumb strength, that’s probably true. In fact, it’s more than likely true for most of us. This is why I think introducing children to the joys of kids’ bikes at an early age is something that everyone should do.
In fact, I’m often envious; children’s bicycles come in much more interesting styles and colors than do adult bikes. Even as children’s bicycles grow into the field of youth road bikes, they still seem to have more visually interesting choices. But that shouldn’t stop any of us from getting out there and enjoying the open road.
One of the things I remember most fondly from my childhood is the time I spent on my bike. I could go places faster than I ever could walking and there’s really nothing better than stretching my arms out to catch the wind and coasting down a hill with no hands.
All my friends had kids’ sport bikes and we spent hours riding through our neighborhoods and all over town. It’s true that video games weren’t as prevalent as they are today, but you can’t get that thrill of speed and freedom from a console or smart phone.
With all the types of children’s bicycles and youth road bikes out there, even kids’ folding bikes for family vacations, there’s no real excuse for not exposing a child to this wonderful experience. It’s a good idea even if it means we have to get out there and start getting activity ourselves to set a good example!
