When I was a kid, racing my bike up and down the streets of my hometown with my friends, none of us wore helmets. I’m not even sure bike helmets existed way back in those long ago days. If they did, I suspect we all would have thought they were far too geeky. Today, none of us thinks about getting on a bicycle without a helmet, and this is very probably a life-saving thing.
The only bike accessory I had in my childhood was a basket – until I became too cool for that. Times have changed in that respect as well, and for the better. Nowadays, even the most average rider is likely to have such accessories as mirrors and blinking lights that inevitably save them from serious accidents.
Today, it’s wonderful to be able to have things like a water bottle when I ride, not to mention how handy bike mirrors are when I have to ride on city streets. There was also no such thing as a bike cover when I was first introduced to this great activity, meaning that wet and rusty cycles were a greater risk.
But don’t totally count out the versatility that a basket can bring you. If you need to make a quick run to the store for some small items like milk or bread, there is no need to start that car engine. Instead, step onto your bike and put those baskets to good use. You can also carry your pet in them if you wish. I suspect that a lot of smaller dogs would really enjoy the wind whipping through their faces!
